The Home Depot gives eligible service members, veterans and spouses 10% off select in-stock purchases, online and in store, up to a $400 discount per calendar year. That cap is the detail most guides leave out, and it decides whether Home Depot or Lowe’s is the better store for a bigger project.

Checked on October 7, 2026 against Home Depot’s military discount terms (homedepot.com/c/military, read through its latest archived copy because the live page blocks automated reading), Home Depot store FAQ pages and the Home Depot newsroom.
How to sign up and use it
- Open the Military Discount Benefit page on homedepot.com or in The Home Depot app.
- Sign in to your personal account or create one.
- Select “Get Started” and complete the SheerID verification. Note: SheerID cannot accept military IDs from people currently serving, so expect to use other documents if asked.
- Your account then shows the Military Discount status.
- Online, sign in and the 10% applies to eligible items in the cart. In store, scan the Virtual ID in the app or enter your registered phone number at the register.
The $400 cap in practice
10% off eligible items. The Home Depot military discount stops at $400 per calendar year, which you reach after $4,000 of eligible spending.
Most households never reach $4,000 of eligible spending in a year, especially since lumber, building materials and appliances are excluded. A kitchen or deck project can, and that is where Lowe’s, which has no cap, becomes the better choice.
What is excluded
- Commodity products such as lumber, wire and building materials
- Appliances (most in-store and online appliances)
- Value-priced merchandise and clearance items
- Special order items, tool rental fees, labor, freight and delivery
- Gift cards and prior purchases
Appliances are a separate case: service members and their dependents can buy Home Depot appliances through the military exchanges (ShopMyExchange.com, myNavyExchange.com) at special military pricing and tax-free. That channel is separate from the 10% discount.

What other sites get wrong
- “Dependents qualify.” Home Depot excludes non-spousal dependents from the 10% discount. Dependents appear only in the separate military exchange channel.
- “Veterans get it only on holidays, in store, with a DD214.” Those were the rules before December 2021. Since then all veterans can enroll and use it online and in store every day.
- “Show your military ID to verify.” Verification runs through SheerID, which cannot accept military IDs from currently serving personnel.
- Many pages leave out the $400 yearly limit completely.
Program history
- December 28, 2021: extended to all US veterans and to online purchases, with pre-registration.
- 2023: partnership with the military exchanges begins, focused on appliances.
- May 1, 2025: exchange channel expanded to over 2 million tax-free products.
